A fond farewell to Peter Canwell
Côr Meibion Llanelli Male Voice Choir will pay a special tribute to one of their favourite composers this week.
Choir members held a minute’s silence at their rehearsals on Monday night after they were told of the death of well-known Teesside composer Peter Canwell at the age of 87.
The choir had a working relationship with Mr Canwell spanning more than 20 years.
On Saturday night, in their Christmas concert at Ffwrnes Theatre, Llanelli, they plan to pay a special tribute to Mr Canwell by performing his ‘A Lovely Christmas Feeling’.
Mr Canwell, the retired headmaster of Stokesley Primary School in Middlesborough, is perhaps best known nationally for writing the much-loved school musical Carrots.
The Stokesley Primary School Choir was featured on TV singing a carol, written by Mr Canwell, called ‘A Christmas Carol for All of the World’.
Côr Meibion Llanelli musical director Mr D Eifion Thomas said: “It is, indeed, sad news regarding Peter’s passing away.
“It was a privilege for my family and I to have known him as a friend and as a gifted composer.
“He was a gentle soul, and his personality was reflected in the lyrics and music which he composed.
“Côr Meibion Llanelli loved performing his ‘Silverbird’, ‘No Room For Mary’, ‘The Miracle of Christmas’ and the ever-popular ‘A Lovely Christmas Feeling’.
“Our soloist Ken Collins loves singing the last song and will be performing ‘A Lovely Christmas Feeling’ in our concert at Ffwrnes on Saturday night.
“Rest in peace, Peter, surrounded forever by the beautiful images which inspired your beautiful music.”
A recording of Côr Meibion Llanelli singing Silverbird will be played at Mr Canwell’s funeral in Teesside on Friday.
Mr Canwell’s daughter Anne Stairmand said: “Côr Meibion Llanelli had a very special place in Peter’s heart and he would visit Llanelli to hear the choir perform his songs. He was very fond of the choir and it is lovely that they are able to pay tribute to him.”
The funeral service is at St Joseph's RC church in Stokesley at 2pm. The committal service at Teesside Crematorium at 3.15pm.
